Workshops
Overview
Academics have always played a major role in the youth development programs provided by Merritting Attention. The “We Study Before We Play” message is imbedded in the mission and strategic plan of the organization. Programs for this year will expand beyond tutoring and mentoring to include group workshops/training for students and parents in several key areas. See below for a brief description of workshops you can expect to see this year.
Tutoring is provided regularly throughout the school year for all participants during the times programming is in session. Tutors are a combination of high school seniors and adult educators who have mastered a particular subject matter. Tutors offer assistance mostly in Math and English but are available for other subject areas such as Science and Social Studies. Merritting Attention issues monthly calendars that post the actual dates and times when tutoring is available. Tutoring sessions are generally held in the same location as basketball practice and camps.
Work Study sessions are mandatory for all Merritting Attention Basketball Club (MABC) members during the travel season.
Upcoming Workshops – Dates TBD
Nutrition
The Nutrition seminar is designed for students and parents. A wide range of topics are covered so that members will develop healthy eating habits for life. Topics include eating behaviors, proper diet, diet fads, fast food and food myths. Special consideration is given to what student athletes should eat and drink before, during and after school and athletic contests.
Personal Hygiene
The Personal Hygiene seminar is for all students to learn the basics of personal hygiene for their overall health and wellness as they grow and develop as young people.
CPR / First Aid
Students and parents are taught the fundamental life saving techniques used in CPR and First Aid. A certificate is given to each member who completes the course.
Home Alone Safety Training
Students learn how to manage themselves and younger siblings when they are home alone without adult supervision for short periods of time. The seminar covers basic safety and security measures to follow at home to prevent accidents and protect themselves and those they are caring for.
Money Management
Students learn the importance of how to save and spend their money wisely, whether they receive an allowance or work a part time job. The lessons learned can be used for their own financial security as they mature into young adults.
Career Services
Even young people must learn the proper ways to find a job, dress for an interview and conduct themselves during an interview. And, after they land a job, what behaviors are expected by their employers for them to be successful.
